WALK and EXERCISE

Humans evolved as hunter gatherers – walking and physical exercise was an integral part of everyday life for our ancestors. A million years back, sitting would have been a luxury we just could not afford. Jump to the present and across the world, majority of the people now live sedentary lives, sitting for long stretches. Driving to work, sitting at a desk or computer, watching tv at night etc. This lack of daily physical exercise has contributed to many malaises of modern society – obesity, depression and several lifestyle diseases.

Because it seems so simple and so straightforward, we sometimes tend to overlook the amazing power of physical exercise in our general plan for health and holistic fitness.  Research shows that physical activity has a profound impact on our health.  Regular exercise effectively increases an enzyme called hormone sensitive lipase as well as the mitochondrial content of fat cells. The combination of these two increases your body’s ability to burn fat.  By exercising just 150 minutes per week, diabetes risks can reduce by 60%!

Don’t just sit there!

Scientists say today that sitting more than four hours per day can be really bad. It can increase damage of organs like the heart, pancreas and colon; muscle degeneration, leg disorders, foggy brain and back problems such as inflexible spine and disk damage.

In response to this new research, a few organisations are passing on the advice about reducing sittion hours and also providing stand up tables.
